It’s All About The Base

Learn about 8 different types of bases for round and not quite round baskets which move away from the normal woven base. You will learn how to stake up and weave/border a basket with a:

  • hidden plywood base- side holes (just like we use on our coffins) and pull down wale or a foot border
  • slate bottom
  • log section bottom (with or without a trac border),
  • Catalonian base (where the base weavers become the stakes)
  • plywood base- top holes
  • and a open Scandinavian style base (suitable for carrying your fish home in!)

You will be amazed how easy they all are to use and how professional they can look as the stakes are much easier to set and control.

A good gentle introduction for those new to basketry with the time and space to explore weaves alongside bases or an intensive day for improvers who want to have a go at a number of different options.

Depending on experience and type of basket chosen there may be an opportunity to make more than one baskets using different bases/techniques.
